The United Nations Global Compact Network Ghana continues to empower the next generation of sustainability leaders through the 2026 SDG Innovation Accelerator for Young Professionals, equipping emerging business leaders with the knowledge, tools, and collaborative networks to develop innovative solutions that address real-world business challenges while advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Accelerator is a global flagship programme of the United Nations Global Compact that brings together young professionals from diverse industries to mainstream innovation for sustainable development. By equipping participants with practical innovation methodologies and systems thinking approaches, the programme empowers them to become champions of sustainability within their organizations and future leaders capable of driving responsible business transformation.
This year’s third cohort comprised of young professionals from L’Aine HR, KEK Insurance Brokers Ltd., The Ghana Chamber of Mines, AngloGold Ashanti Ghana, Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), Jospong Group of Companies, Ghana Manganese Company Ltd.,and the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF).
Throughout the first three Accelerator Camps, participants have embarked on an intensive innovation journey designed to help them identify pressing sustainability challenges, explore opportunities for business innovation, and develop impactful solutions that create value for both business and society.
Building the Foundation for Innovation
The programme commenced with Accelerator Camp 1, where participants explored their personal sustainability journeys and examined how the Sustainable Development Goals intersect with their industries and organizations.
Working collaboratively, participants identified key social, environmental, and market risks and opportunities linked to the SDGs and applied innovation tools and methodologies to frame meaningful business challenges. The session established a strong foundation for innovation by encouraging participants to think critically about sustainability challenges from both business and societal perspectives.
Defining Challenges Through Systems Thinking
Building on this foundation, Accelerator Camp 2 focused on strengthening participants’ understanding of ambitious SDG business challenges through user-centred design, stakeholder engagement, and systems-based thinking.
Participants refined their challenge statements by examining root causes, identifying key stakeholders, and gaining deeper insights into the complex systems surrounding the issues they aim to solve. This stage enabled teams to sharpen their focus and lay the groundwork for developing innovative, scalable solutions capable of delivering measurable impact.
Transforming Ideas into Solutions
During Accelerator Camp 3, the programme entered its solution development phase, with participants refining innovative responses to real-world business challenges aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Through structured collaboration, peer-to-peer learning, expert mentorship, and constructive feedback, teams strengthened their proposed solutions, enhanced their impact pathways, and improved their ability to clearly communicate both the business value and sustainability outcomes of their innovations.
The collaborative nature of the Accelerator has enabled participants to challenge conventional thinking, learn from one another’s experiences, and build practical solutions that respond to the evolving sustainability needs of Ghana’s private sector.
As the programme progresses toward its final stages, participants continue to demonstrate creativity, resilience, and a strong commitment to embedding sustainability and innovation within their organizations.
